Nan, Inc. was awarded the Kealakehe Elementary School project in 2022 as the lowest bidder. On Friday, January 30, 2026, the project reached an important milestone with a successful groundbreaking ceremony, officially marking the start of construction.
The event was attended by leadership from the Department of Accounting & General Services and the Department of Education, including engineering and public works representatives, the school’s principal and vice principal, and members of the Kealakehe leadership teams. Nan, Inc.’s project engineers, building superintendent, and civil superintendent were also present to support the kickoff of the project.
The project includes the construction of a new two-story classroom building with a basement designed to support the school’s growing needs. Two pedestrian bridges will connect the new building to an existing classroom building and the school cafeteria, improving circulation and accessibility across campus. Additional site improvements include a new lower parking lot with 45 additional parking stalls, as well as updated striping for the existing upper parking lot.
The scope of work includes site preparation and campus improvements such as clearing and grading, earthwork, removal of an existing portable building, and new asphalt and concrete paving. New construction includes casting in place large footings, columns, and erecting the complex structural steel classroom building. The project provides five new indoor classrooms outfitted with air conditioning and one outdoor classroom with creative lanai space with two quick access foot bridges to adjacent facilities. The projects new infrastructure will help accommodate the community’s growing number of students whilst giving the school’s faculty the additional resources; parking, equipment, and upgraded learning space to give the keiki a more convenient and elevated learning experience.
The groundbreaking event proceeded smoothly, marking the official start of construction and reinforcing Nan, Inc.’s commitment to delivering high-quality educational facilities for Hawaiʻi’s communities.
