Nuuanu Residence
It all started when Douglas Sylva, one of Nan,
Inc.’s superintendents, caught a news story by Leslie
Wilcox on KHON about an elderly family in Nuuanu who could
not keep up with the maintenance of their home. This family,
which has no means of income except from social security,
had accumulated a large amount of fines from the City because
of the decaying condition of their condemned home.
The rest is history, and so far, the demolition phase has
been completed, where Doug had coordinated the efforts of
over 70 volunteers from Nan, Inc.’s work force and staff.
All ranges of the company’s personnel came to support
the cause including field tradesmen, foremen, superintendents,
quality control managers, safety officers, project managers,
and corporate officers. Amazingly, it took 4 large commercial
dumpsters to haul away all the debris and rubbish.
Doug and a group of carpenters returned after the demolition
to stabilize the home since the construction phase is currently
pending upon the permit approvals. Until construction begins,
Doug has been visiting the residence nearly every weekend
to check on the family and to do some landscaping and cleanup
work. This included trimming down large overgrown mango trees
with money that was raised from a charity concert at his church.
Nan, Inc. would like to extend its appreciation to the many
